There are few places in Mexico where you have the opportunity of studying in a diversified community with people of all ages, backgrounds, and countries committed to their craft while enjoying our beautiful historic city of San Miguel de Allende.

Right here in our hometown, we have the pleasure of hosting visitors from all over the world at our vacation rental in San Miguel who travel near and far to enhance their education in a variety of capacities.   There are several well-respected schools that offer photography, language, painting, sculpting, and cooking too.

As the choices are many, we’re dedicating our April blogs to all the arts and culture schools in San Miguel that are just a short drive from Casa Magdalena.

Students have the chance to study with Mexican artists who live in San Miguel and others who come from Mexico City. There are several schools where you can take painting, sculpture, and photography classes. You can even earn a BA or study your Masters of Fine Arts. The highlight is that you will be part of an international art community while you enjoy your well-deserved vacation!

We have researched a variety of options that just might work for you and your personal interests:

Instituto Allende. The Lifelong Learning Program at the Centro Cultural / Instituto Allende provides San Miguel de Allende residents and visitors with the opportunity of taking courses designed for self-enrichment, intellectual stimulation, and fun. Courses are designed for adult learners by skilled instructors. All program staff and instructors are volunteers to keep tuition as low as possible.  There are classes in drawing, art history, photography, writing, painting, sculpture and graphic design. For details about the programs and application procedures, click to their website right here.

Instituto de Bellas Artes (INBA, National Institute of Fine Arts) The official name is Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramirez, and it is run by the Mexican government and located in a beautiful former convent where they host a variety of classes. For more specifics, click here.

Academia de Fotografia  The classes in this well-known institution are taught by local professors and visiting artists who offer full-immersion programs for first-time to the most talented photographers. Both group and private workshops are offered in our fully-equipped digital labs. Frequent discussions and critiques with fellow students will strengthen your understanding of photography as an art form.  The Academia also rents lab space to professional photographers.

Galeria San Francisco  One of our favorite things to do and see is the Galeria San Fransico – an elegant studio inside a historical Mexican colonial building.  Throughout the year, they offer contemporary and academic art classes with instruction in Figure Drawing, Acrylic Painting, Mixed Media and more. Centrally located in front of the famous landmark, La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel Church, students enjoy classes with breathtaking views and opportunities to shop and eat at nearby restaurants after their class.
